Family engagement is a foundational component of high quality early childhood programs.  Engaging families from backgrounds different from our own requires educators to dig deep into their own cultural beliefs and practices as well as being open to learning about the cultural beliefs and practices of others. The linguistic goals that families have for their children need to be clearly understood so they can be affirmed and supported in early childhood settings.  Educators have to create space to integrate the families’ funds of knowledge in meaningful ways in their routines, curriculum and events….not just food and fiestas. During this session, examples will provide a starting place for our discussion on how to transform your classroom and program practices to engage families authentically.
